31 for 21 (#11) Lunch with Nora

Get It Down; 31 for 21

I visited Nora’s elementary cafeteria Friday, joining her for lunch. Parents may come to eat after stopping at “security,” checking in and the like. Of course, I had the boys with me. Generally, I still pop the car seats in the stroller. It is easier and the boys remain where they ought to remain. But yesterday, I let Elliot sit upright in the front of the stroller (he flops a bit, but I thought that he'd enjoy the "scenery"). Isaac remained in his car seat.

As expected, Elliot was very LOUD, as he was thrilled to see what was going on around him. And, as he cannot speak, he yelled his “DAAAA,” “YAAAA,” “OOOOOH,” and such the whole time. Let’s just say that, even among the clamor of a grade school lunch room, Elliot stood out and all of the children’s eyes were focused on him.

One of Nora’s classmates asked how old Elliot was. When told that he was two, she piped up and said, “I have a two-year old sister and she talks…what is wrong with your brother?”

I sunk.

But, as in typical Nora fashion, she piped up with, “Elliot has Down syndrome – you know an extra ‘crom-o-sone.’" “He is special and takes a little longer to learn.” “I think it is COOL and so is he!”

Cool indeed. That’s my girl!
